About the Department of Industrial Design

The Source of Innovation and Invention

The Department of Industrial Design was established in 1997 and graduated its first student in 2001. The undergraduate program admits approximately 75 students each year through the YKS exam. The normal education period is 4 years. Students who fail the English proficiency exam must attend and successfully complete a one-year English preparatory class before taking the department courses. Each academic year consists of two semesters, fall and spring. Summer school is also available. Each academic year consists of two semesters, fall and spring. The medium of instruction is English. The Department of Industrial Design aims to train qualified designers needed in our country with its education programs. Depending on this aim, design studies are carried out for different fields that reflect the real needs of the industry. Within the scope of these studies, the design of various products such as all kinds of tools, furniture and automotive products related to production-consumption-investment areas are included.

During the education process, our students are provided with the opportunity to increase their practical knowledge by establishing relations with the industry and to meet the real needs of the industry.  The main mission of the department is to train our students as designers who live today but think for the future and try to shape tomorrow.

The current aim of the Department of Industrial Design, which has been teaching and training in Turkey for many years, is to train the best and talented designers who can solve the design problems that the Turkish industry is currently facing and may face in the future and realize them as a product in a science and art environment bearing the identity of Yeditepe.

Our Department, which includes investment products, automotive, furniture, packaging and many other industries as well as daily or durable consumer goods, has an understanding that takes into account the science, art and trends of the age as well as the representative of the classical education school based on talent as a natural extension of its academic tradition. For this reason, since the day our University was founded, it has been diligently maintaining its system of selecting students to bring talented candidates to the profession, specific to the nature of the profession.

An important feature of the education-training program for different branches of expertise is that it takes into account the connections of the design fields and subjects studied with the realities and future of the country as well as the universal research and production conditions. For this reason, our students are equipped to carry out design activities in any organization in any country in the world. Thus, our students are provided with the opportunity to nurture relationships that nourish cultural and institutional cooperation activities outside of education as well as within education.

We confidently maintain our belief that our young people, who are capable of designing new and up-to-date systems and products, who cannot be stopped by any constraints and limitations, who are equipped with art and science and who are prepared for the future, will be with us again this year.

What is Industrial Design Department?

The scope of the Industrial Design Department includes the design of all kinds of products that can be mass-produced by evaluating the needs of users. The aim of the department is to train industrial product designers who can produce solutions to problems in usability, form, ergonomics, production, and successfully coordinate the R&D process of new products.

After the 1st grade basic art and design education aimed at developing students' three-dimensional thinking ability and creativity, it is supported by technical knowledge, studio and skill courses in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. In this way, students' analytical and three-dimensional thinking abilities are tried to be increased.

The Department of Industrial Design is one of the popular professions of today and it seems that it will continue to increase the same popularity tomorrow. The department, which is recommended to be preferred by students who are confident in their creative and different thinking abilities, is one of the areas where it is a pleasant process to receive education.

Industrial Design Department History

The Department of Industrial Design at Yeditepe University, founded in 1996 by Prof. Sadun ERSİN within the Faculty of Fine Arts program, is the first private university department opened in this field in Turkey. Our education, which has been under the chairmanship of Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazan BORA and Prof. Dr. Cemil TOKA for many years, has been carried out under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşem Gülin BAŞAR since 2018 Spring Semester.

Today, our department has a comprehensive education program with its education staff consisting of professionals and academicians. Our main goal is for our graduates to be creative, visionary, socially and environmentally aware with all kinds of equipment.

In research and education, Yeditepe Department of Industrial Design utilizes its own computer laboratories, which are frequently updated for computer-aided design, image processing, desktop publishing, multimedia presentations and data analysis. In addition, the department has three floors of wood, metal, plastic, ceramic and computer-aided manufacturing and rapid prototyping workshops, and three-dimensional printing equipment updated with the latest technologies.

Studying Industrial Design at Yeditepe University

Industrial product design is a branch that is essentially connected to every aspect of life. Everything we look at around us is a design product. Due to the creation of human beings, everyone has more or less design potential. Yeditepe University Industrial Design Department tries to emphasize these creative qualities of students. Workshops are organized to bring these creativity of students to the forefront. In university-industry cooperation studies, the works of the students are transformed into a form that will directly meet with the consumer. Collaborations with different sectors each semester provide students with both job and internship opportunities after graduation. These studies can be carried out with national companies as well as international companies. In particular, our department students, who have realized effective projects with the automotive sector, have carried out a successful project by preparing a bus seat and instrument panel in this context. The students who took part in this project even had the chance to find a job in the automotive company in question. By developing cooperation with different sectors in various projects every semester, both production technologies and job opportunities can be brought together with the real sector and the importance of cooperation can be kept alive during the education process.

The department has an advanced workshop designed with state-of-the-art technology. In this workshop, there is a computer laboratory equipped with CNC to 3D Printer. These opportunities are provided for students to create their projects during the education process.

Students can expand their vision with elective courses in many different and innovative fields. During the education process, both practical and theoretical approaches are used to further develop these visions.

What does a graduate of Industrial Design Department do? Where Do They Work?

Industrial Design provides you with training to learn the theoretical possibilities for the use of materials and production management equipment. The education received in this field allows you to gain effective and creative design skills as well as technical knowledge. In addition to this, you are also equipped with some aspects that are seen as a plus feature by employers in the sector. With each project you take part in, your presentation skills improve. It is ensured that you establish better relationships with the other party. There are still features that need to be developed during the student journey. Developing communication skills, having responsibility in teamwork as well as individual work, entrepreneurship, being able to apply problem solving techniques effectively, developing visual perception skills, using computer-aided design programs effectively are some of these features.

The industrial design profession, which is closely related to design and engineering, creative arts, etc., has widespread job opportunities in the domestic and industrial product sector, design-based consultancy, automotive sector and self-employment. In this context, industrial designers have employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Jobs in the private sector include products for the industrial and local market. Jobs in the public sector range from the design of information points in public spaces to the design of equipment for fire brigades and police departments.

Degree to be obtained

Students who successfully complete the program are entitled to receive a four-year "Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design from the Faculty of Architecture".

Graduation Requirements

In order to complete the undergraduate program and graduate, students are required to have a 2.00/4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). In order to graduate, students are required to complete 134 Local Credit - 240 ECTS course load.

Admission Requirements

Within the framework of the regulations determined by the Higher Education Council (YÖK), student admission to the Faculty of Architecture is evaluated by the Student Selection and Placement Examination (YKS) conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYS). Students are admitted to the four-year Industrial Design academic program with numerical score type.

Foreign students are evaluated after applying online from the International Office web page (http://international.yeditepe.edu.tr/international-application) established within our University.

Students are admitted to programs with a General Academic Exchange Protocol within the framework of bilateral agreements (such as ERASMUS, etc.) signed between Yeditepe University and the partner university. Guest students can enroll in the courses offered in these programs if the relevant academic unit approves. Language proficiency is required to follow the program.
