Content: Definition, concept and types of Landscape; presentation of subject and interests of Landscape Architecture; relations of Landscape Architecture with other disciplines such as designing, planning, engineering and art; fields of study, with their changing scales; presentation of design processes in regard to these changing scales; approach to design elements by using samples; presentation of landforms and their types, plant materials, landscape elements and structures in basic level.

Content: Teaching the basic information about the soil where plants are grown by a landscape architect. Expressions of basic concepts of soil like soil types, parent rock and organic materials, the structure of the soil, depth of soil, etc.

Content: The basic purpose of the program is to provide the students with a common understanding of the usefulness and the effective methods of studying history, on the importance of the revolutionary history of Turkey and the role of Ataturk. The fields of study of the program are Ottoman history, the war of independence, achievements and leadership values of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk the process of founding the Turkish Republic, the social and political history of the 20th century.

Content: In this course, Students will extend basic modeling skills and a working knowledge of materials and processes by developing concepts using models and presentations. Learning takes place in a studio environment and students will be encouraged to take part in critiquing their own and other’s work. The practice of design combines both independent and collaborative work and this course requires you to use both methods of design development.

Content: This course aims to give the necessary knowledge to enhance the planting design projects by examining the design characteristics and various functional uses of plant materials which are one of the most extremely important physical elements of landscape design used by landscape architects. Basic principles of planting design, basic elements of planting composition, plant characteristics as a design determinant, aesthetic, architectural and engineering uses of plant material, planting design process (preparations of planting design, site analysis, plant selection, spacing of plants etc.), different approaches to planting design, design considerations of some special projects, discussions about the case studies.
LAUD 200 SUMMER PRACTICE I (0+0+0) 5
Content: This summer practice aims to give students basic knowledge about surveying methods, grading techniques (cut and fill), slope analysis and the basic skills of map reading and recognizing topographic symbols. Measurements pertaining to topography and landforms are demonstrated. The two weeks of summer training will have both field surveying and drawing components. When the summer practice is completed students are asked to write an evaluation report of their summer practice and submit to the department at the beginning of the fall semester.

LAUD 300 SUMMER PRACTICE II (0+0+0) 5
Content: The aim of this summer practice is to give students an experience on-site; i.e. plant identification (trees, shrubs, ground covers, perennials and annual plants, etc.), their physical characteristics (color, form, texture, scale), their ecological requirements (earth, light and fertilizer requirements), production techniques (seeds, cuttings, etc.), plant composition, planting design, application and maintenance (fertilizers, watering). The minimum time for this practice is four weeks. When the summer practice is completed students are asked to write an evaluation report of their summer practice and submit to the department at the beginning of the fall semester.

LAUD 305 URBAN AND ECOLOGY (2+0+2) 4
Content: In this course, It is aimed to inform students about issues such as definition and content of urban ecology; pre-modern, modernism and post-ecological approaches; biodiversity in urban areas, pollution and waste management, climate change, sustainability and eco-cities and to use of urban ecology in landscape planning and design.

Content: Construction techniques of specific structures built with landscape construction materials. Specific structures include pavements, decks, stairs & ramps, walls, retaining walls, fences, urban furniture, water features and shade structures.

Content: Definition of lawn and groundcovers. Botanical and ecological features of lawn and groundcovers, identification of brush species used for preventing erosion. Definition of the green space. Explains the ecological features of the lawn. Explains breeding of lawns regarding climatic conditions. Explains the different usages of the lawn. Explains the ground-covering bushes and plants that can be used as the lawn. Explains erosion. Explains the methods of breeding lawns and groundcovers.

Content: The course aims to give feedback to the students about the evaluation of the components of rural landscape planning and design; Planning techniques of conservation areas such as natural areas, national parks, nature reserves protected areas, scientific areas, wetlands, etc. and the rural landscape planning process. Concepts of the natural landscape, protected areas, rural landscape forms, devastation factors in natural - rural areas; methods of rural landscape planning; planning and design principles of plantations, agricultural areas, industrial zones, rural recreation areas and transportation zones; scientific approaches, principles and methods towards ecological restoration and nature conservation studies.

Content: The aim of this course is to make the students use the sustainability approach efficiently in their landscape architecture and urban design studies by giving basic knowledge of the concepts of sustainability and sustainable design. The concept of sustainability, the historical background, the concept and principles of sustainable design, tools and methods of sustainable design, life-cycle assessment, the significance of sustainable landscape architecture and urban design, principles of sustainable landscape design and urban planning, developments in recent years.

Content: The aim of this course is by examining the human-environment interactions from the environmental design point of view to guide the students to design landscape spaces that enhance the life quality of human beings and which fit human nature most. Basic Concepts in Environmental Psychology, examining the human-environment interactions from environmental design point of view, basic processes that takes place in human beings that affect landscape preference (environmental perception, environmental cognition, environmental evaluation), human needs, behavioural mechanisms of human beings, landscape aesthetics, landscape preference and landscape assessment, recent studies on the subject and different approaches, factors effecting landscape preference, environmental evaluation methods that can be used for evaluating landscape spaces.

Content: Identify the professional duties of a landscape architect, and the process of completing a real-life landscape architectural project. Professional Practice, Professional Liability, Permits and Regulations, Bidding Strategies, Contract and Tender, Cost Data, Cost Estimating, Construction Area, Project Management, Employment.
LAUD 408 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (2+0+2) 3
Content: At the end of this course, students will be able to take part in an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Study, to discuss matters about EIA, to play an active role as a landscape architect in the development of the EIA concept in Turkey.

Content: Concepts and practices of architectural and urban conservation in Turkey and developing countries, emphasizing on conservation and regeneration of ‘living heritage’, the balance between architectural and urban conservation and cultural tourism, and community participation in cultural heritage management and planning.

FA 106 DRAWING TECHNIQUES
Content: Within the context of this course the project of a house with a couple spaces will be worked by starting from the drawings of geometric forms and objects. The house project will be drawn in terms of application project with furnishing of wet spaces and sizes as well. Practices over drawings of objects, house plan and sections of them will be made by students.
ARCH 103 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR ARCHITECTS
Content: Experiments on geometric thinking, 2D and 3D drawings through computer programs particularly with Google Sketchup.
ARCH 105 COMPUTER AIDED PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES ( 1+2+2) 5
Content: The aim of the course is to examine the development of architecture within the fundamental concepts and components through historical process; context, physical-socio cultural environment, history and precedents, contemporary concepts, function, form, technology, material and structure.
ARCH 301 PLANNING AND EXECUTION CONCEPTS (1+2+2) 3
Content: Making a general sequence of laws and regulations, plan types and project approval process in architectural applications. Informing and defining the specific zoning concepts and terms used in application and legislation. Explanation of the course with construction application examples.
LAUD 204 MODEL MAKING AND PRESENTATION SKILLS
Content: This course is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to create a 3D topographic and landscape model and objects from a 2D plan. It aims to develop students’ ability to understand the functions of models in design and visualize 3D forms from 2D plans using techniques that use minimal tools and materials in different architectural scales. The student will complete the construction of a house, a lighting post, a pergola and sports areas and such details on the selected sample models.
LAUD 220 INDOOR PLANTS
Content: This course aims to learn how to recognize the more common foliage and flowering plants, or cut flowers that are seen in malls, stores, and restaurants, or may be used at home. It also provides the basics of design, plant care, and plant problems and care for houseplants. This course combines lecture notes and specific details on about 120 indoor plants. Extensive descriptions, cultural information, and lists of species and cultivars are given for key plants in groups such as foliage, cacti, succulents, orchids, cut flowers, and flowering potted plants.
LAUD 311 PLANT BREEDING TECHNIQUES
Content: The main aim of this course is to enable students with the propagation and maintenance of ornamental plants. Nursery and greenhouse, site selection principles, sapling breeding, generative breeding techniques, vegetative breeding techniques, micro and macro breeding techniques, ornamental plant breeding techniques and cutting techniques.
LAUD 414 CONSERVATION PLANNING AND DESIGN
Content: Provide the students a systematic and contemporary approach to urban conservation that can be used in defining the general characteristics and conservation problems of historic sites considering the current legal, administrative, financial and managerial means. Research, survey, analysis, evaluation and preparation of conservation master plan proposals for a historic site by the use of Geographic Information Systems. Detailed study of the natural, architectural, visual and certain socio-economic characteristics as well as the historical development of the historic site.
LAUD 416 DESIGN SCENARIOS FOR EVERYDAY SPACES
Content: This course is designed to understand and apply the various strategies and aspects of small space and flexible spaces design and special accessibility for a minority like children, elderly, handicapped people.
LAUD 417 METEOROLOGY
Content: The course will cover three of the four basic earth subsytems (the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere) and their relationships and interconnections, as well as our human relationship with them. This course is a broad introduction, from severe weather to climate change, including many applications and tools used in modern forecasting and research.
